Guppy Grass is a fantastic option for aquarists looking to add dense greenery, natural cover, and water purification to their tanks. This plant is especially well-suited for beginners—it’s hardy, adaptable, and doesn’t require fancy equipment to thrive. Whether you're breeding fish, raising shrimp, or simply want a vibrant underwater jungle, this beginner aquarium plant is a great plant that delivers results with minimal effort.

INFO

Scientific Name: Najas guadalupensis
Common Name: Guppy Grass
Growth Rate: Fast
Light Requirements: Low to High
Temperature Range: 68–82°F (20–28°C)
Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5; Soft to Moderately Hard Water
Placement: Floating or Planted

Guppy Grass is incredibly versatile. It can be floated freely or planted in substrate, and it grows quickly under most lighting conditions. Its bushy, branching structure provides excellent habitat and filtration, making it a favorite for both beginners and seasoned hobbyists. Due to its rapid growth, regular trimming may be needed to prevent overgrowth.

Common Uses

As the name suggests, Guppy Grass is ideal for guppy tanks and other livebearer setups. It offers dense coverage that provides a safe space for fry to hide and thrive. Shrimp love it, too—its fine texture offers excellent grazing surfaces and shelter.

Beyond cover, Guppy Grass helps maintain water quality by absorbing nitrates and other excess nutrients. It’s often used in breeding tanks, natural aquascapes, and low-tech setups. Whether you're stocking a shrimp tank, breeding guppies, or just want a plant that works hard and looks great, Guppy Grass is a smart, flexible choice.

A Quick Note About Live Plants

At Scallywags, we carefully inspect and rinse every batch of Guppy Grass before shipping. However, since our plants are raised in healthy, snail-friendly environments, it's possible that snails, snail eggs, or even a few pieces of duckweed may hitch a ride. If you're aiming for a snail-free or duckweed-free tank, we recommend a gentle dip in a plant-safe solution like diluted potassium permanganate or alum before introducing Guppy Grass to your aquarium.
